 | Hello. I'm Calvin.
I am a new author, aspiring game designer, and experienced aerospace engineer.
As a child, I was an avid reader, consuming the works of Jules Verne and J.R.R. Tolkien with equal voracity, before reading everything I could get my hands on. It seemed only natural that I would turn my reader's inquisitiveness into a writer's industriousness, and I've finished my first full-length novel! Now I need to find an agent and publisher, but I can see the goal of being a published author in sight.
I began playing role-playing games when I was nine, and started game mastering when I was ten. I played a variety of games, including Dungeons and Dragons, Shadowrun, Vampire the Masquerade, and many more. However, while all were great fun in their way, I wanted a game designed around the elements I truly admired. Not finding one on bookshelves, I began designing my own. Finally, I've finished producing Age of Æther, the Historical Steampunk Fantasy Role-Playing Game!
Both my novel-writing and my game design are influenced by my career as an engineer. Both paused as I pursued by undergraduate degree, and both my novels and my game have been shaped by the knowledge gained in my career. The science in my novels reflects my real-world knowledge of technology and space exploration, and my steampunk RPG considers how magic would interact with advancing technology.
When not working as an engineer, assembling Age of Æther or writing a novel, I hike and bike (in the summer) and ski (in the winter). I still find time to read. I split my literary interests between speculative fiction of all types and historical topics. I am an avid historian, and love researching life in prior eras. Often, I find that my thorough knowledge of a historical period can help me build a world, even in a land of magic and dragons or on a faraway planet. |
