 | Colin Decio was born in Birmingham, England to an English mother and a Ukrainian father â hence the surname! From 1982 he studied Piano Performing, Piano Teaching, Classical Guitar and Composition at the Birmingham School of Music, UK (now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire), graduating with five diplomas - including a distinction in composition, in 1986.
In 1986 the legendary pianist John Ogdon performed Colinâs 1st Piano Sonata.
Colin has performed many solo piano recitals throughout the UK, and toured New Zealand in 2005.
In 2012 Colin toured the UK with Souvenir dâAnne Frank as pianist in the Decio Piano Trio. (Souvenir dâAnne Frank is a theatre work, the development of which took as itâs starting point Colinâs - Piano Trio for Anne Frank âHet Achterhuisâ. In Brechtian style the piano trio is onstage throughout. Souvenir dâAnne Frank was highly praised by Anneâs cousin Buddy Elias).
Since receiving a permanent residence visa and arriving in New Zealand in 2016 Colin has been awarded - 1st Prize and the Audience Award in the New Zealand Double Reed Society Composition Competition 2017; finalist in the Auckland Clarinet Competition 2017; and Highly Commended in the Sounz Brass Composition Prize 2020. |
