two countries, with my grandmother being born in
Queens NY and i was born in Jamaica ,grew up in new
york,now reside in Maryland.Growing up in the eithies
in new york when it was the golden age of hip
hop,jamaican soundsystem was in business and was in clubs
on street corners and in house parties.It was the
best of both world for my young age in a evolution
music culture.then there was a time that came at a prime age when i was a teen,my grandmother pasted
away and my mom took us back to jamaica for her
funeral.it was a bitter sweet moment, but mom makes sure we had fun.Soon as we landed and knowing that we are here at the mecca of soundsystem and soundclash.I notice momories of me enjoying my childhood years being a kid should not take for granted.the vibes was right and the feeling being back in jamaica... the music,food and the cool breeze lead me back to a neibhorhood joint and it was still there,it also had a soundsystem and a jukebox,but it was just for the spot, and it was still serving my favorite soda pop.I visited studios that was created from having a soundsystem ,and find time admired the the work and vibes of different talents showing up at the studio.I see that having a soundsystem comes with being producer,singers,and engineers.Then when it turns from evening to night if its not studio soundsystem having a session, around the neigborhood you may notice other dj's soundsystem on the corner or on the side of the street.If its not the vibe of the selection of music or a popular soundsystem, you'll see the curfew it carries.I see artists making their seen to hear their favorite soundsystem and dj/selectors intro-ing their most forward selections.Soundsystem build talents and have artist showed up;especially when a young talent star on the rise you wonder if they gonna sing or rap and yes they did and that's when i fell in love of the soundsystem movement.After heading back to the states i told a few friends how much i would love to have a sounsystem.Now grown up all i thought about is how close i came to having a soundsystem,and that only experience was only getting dubplates and promoting event.Now having kids the time for it was cut short and the decline of soundsystem also due to many clashes that ended dj/selectors sounds business;but then it came to me,for some how the love of this culture given a new way to show my appreciation and to grasp apart of the experience,and that's how songklash got started. |
